Happy New Year Friends!

January 5, 2012

Another year…another 365 opportunities for culinary adventures! Now I realize that many people are trying to detox after holiday egg nog, cookies, champagne, chocolates, fatty meats, bread…is your stomach still aching?  If you need some motivation and haven’t heard of Drew yet, check out his website:  Drew is a personal trainer who literally sacrificed his body for 6 months so he could identify with his clients who were having a rough time losing weight. So, in those six months, he ate everything he wanted with abandon and stopped exercising– rapidly gaining over 60 pounds. Now, you can follow his journey as he gets fit. Both he and his wife have put in so much effort to give viewers a comprehensive exercise and nutrition plan to help people get back on track. I have never seen anything like this and am grateful for people like Drew who put in their time and effort to help people get fit and healthy. My take on health is to eat like my Middle Eastern grandparents–emphasizing leafy veggies, monosaturated fats like almonds, olives,  and olive oil, beans and legumes, and using spices rather than excess salt or fat to flavor my foods.  Try this exercise: when you go grocery shopping, pretend you are your great grandparents walking down the aisles. If you think they would recognize the foods, then buy them, but if they wouldn’t even know some of those “foods” then stay away.  A quick and excellent read is “Food Rules” by Michael Pollan–a quick guide of rules to live buy when deciding what to eat. Better yet check out any of his books:   Pollan is my hero in awakening people to go back to the basics.  Industrial farming and factories have complicated our food supply. Our job for optimum health is to cut through this madness and and just eat old fashioned food! Happy New year everyone!
